Loose diamonds
Choose the diamond before the setting
Sit with a loupe and a GIA certificate, compare stones side by side, then build the ring around the one you keep coming back to.
Reading a GIA certificate: the four Cs
- Cut
- How well the diamond is proportioned and finished, which decides how it returns light. For a round brilliant, GIA grades cut from Excellent to Poor.
- Color
- How close to colorless the stone is, graded from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). The difference between neighboring grades is often only visible side by side.
- Clarity
- The size and number of natural inclusions and blemishes, graded from Flawless to I3. Many stones look clean to the eye well below Flawless.
- Carat
- The weight of the diamond. One carat is 0.2 grams. Two stones of the same weight can look different in size depending on the cut.
